China's aging population — people aged 60 or above — last year reached 178 million, or 13.26 percent of the total, which is 3 percent higher than in 2000, according to the latest population census.

China National Committee on Aging Tuesday released an annual statistical report. It said that a total of 257 million urban residents joined endowment insurance, 22 million more than in 2009. Another 103 million rural citizens joined rural social endowment insurance.

The number of elderly welfare agencies also increased by 233 to 39,904. The numbers of beds rose by a 9 percent to 3.15 million, according to the report.

China held its sixth national population census last year, which showed the country's total population hit nearly 1.34 billion in 2010.
