Tap water supply has been restored in Hunan Province after a local river was contaminated by an oil spill Thursday night, said government officials.
The tap water supply to Yiyang City's 400,000 residents resumed at 8:50 p.m. Friday after it was suspended for 15 hours, according to Yiyang municipal government spokesman.
About three tonnes of diesel oil leaked Thursday night from a oil-transport ship, which was traveling on the Zijiang River that flows through the city in Hunan Province, polluting a source of tap water for the Yiyang Tap Water Plant.
The ship owner has been taken into police custody, the spokesman said.
Efforts have been made to clean up the oil, such as using sacks to mop it up, said the spokesman.
The tests conducted every half an hour show that the water at the tap water source was up to standard Friday evening, so the water supply was resumed, the spokesman said.
The cause of the leak is still under investigation.
