The live-ammunition test of a new-type guided bomb began in midsummer of 2012 at a shooting range of a test base in west China. With an order of "fire", the shell loaded with reconnaissance and guided devices pierced the sky with a fire tail and precisely hit the target over 60 seconds later.

The success of this test marks the PLA artillery force realizes the epoch-making transformation from "fire coverage" to "precision strike".

The developer of the guided bomb is Qian Lizhi, a professor of the Artillery Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and famous expert in IT-based ammunition of the PLA.

During his 32-year service in the PLA, Qian Lizhi has transferred from successful career platforms to the challenging and unfamiliar fields for many times, becoming the pioneer in the study of drone operation application of the PLA and the founder of the development field of the new-type IT-based ammunition of the PLA artillery force. Among the 25 key scientific research projects led by him, two won second prizes of the National Technology Invention Award, one won the second prize of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and 10 won the first or second prizes of the Military Scientific and Technological Progress Award respectively.
