Approved by the General Staff Headquarters (GSH) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), all flying personnel of the PLA Air Force will uniformly wear flight rating badges when in their ceremonial dresses and service uniforms beginning from August 1, 2012, according to the Air Force Headquarters of the PLA.

The wearing position of the flight rating badge is five millimeters above the center of the upper edge of the seniority badge. The same rule applies to the PLA army aviation force and the PLA naval aviation force.

The flight rating badge is a flight rating certificate and a symbol of the mission, honor and responsibility for the flying personnel. Flying personnel in most countries wear flight rating badges. The Chinese PLA Air Force began to implement the flight rating system in 1985. The flight rating system is a comprehensive appraisal of the flying personnel based on their flying skill, tactical level, flight-safety assurance, mission-completing capability and total flight time, which is classified into special-class, class-one, class-two and class-three, and the flight rating badge is composed of patterns including five-pointed star with "August 1" mark, olive-leaf wreath, eagle wings, shield, the Great Wall as well as the rating and specialized symbols. The special-class, class-one, class-two and class-three are indicated by T, 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

According to Xu Huiqing, director of the Organization and Discipline Department under the PLA Air Force Headquarters, wearing flight rating badges when in the ceremonial dresses and service uniforms of the PLA flying personnel beginning from August 1 is an important measure to highlight the honor and responsibility of the flying personnel and is beneficial to invisible stimulation of the sense of honor, sense of pride and strengthening of the mission, honor and responsibility for the flying personnel. At the same time, it is an international practice and convenient to conduct exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts.
