After successfully completing their phased tasks, part of the Chinese military observers to the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) flew back to Beijing on July 25, 2012.

Based on the development and changes of the situation in Syria, the United Nations has recently decided to temporarily downsize the scale of the UNSMIS military observers from 300 people to 150. Therefore, some of the Chinese military observers withdrew.

According to the briefing by a person in charge of the Peacekeeping Affairs Office of the Ministry of National Defense (MND), under the complicated security conditions, the Chinese UNSMIS military observers have nicely completed such peacekeeping tasks as coordination, liaison, supervision, investigation and so on. Their bravery and fearlessness as well as their spirit of unity and cooperation have been highly recognized by the UNSMIS, the host country and the local people.

Currently, China still has some military observers remaining in the UNSMIS, serving respectively as director of the Personnel and Logistics Department, staff officer of the Operation Department, staff officer of the Personnel and Logistics Department, member of the Damascus observer team and others.
