LHASA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- A high-ranking military officer urged armed forces stationed in Tibet to safeguard social stability and harmony with the help of the civilian sector and among different ethnic groups, according to a Friday statement from the military.

Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remark during a recent visit to Tibet, the statement said.

Armed forces stationed in Tibet should protect the sovereignty, security and interests of the country and contribute to the long-term stability and prosperity of Tibet, Guo said.

They should welcome the upcoming 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with excellent performance, he said.

More efforts should be made to ensure the armed forces' loyalty to the CPC, the security and stability of the armed forces and its safeguarding the security and stability of border and air defense, Guo said.

He also urged the armed forces to step up training and prepare themselves for combat-related tasks, as well as assist local governments in maintaining social stability.
