(PLA Daily)

08:17, July 02, 2012

Geng Yansheng, spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense (MND) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), said at the regular press conference of the MND held on the afternoon of June 28, 2012 that China's manned space engineering and China's manned deep submergence engineering are both for peaceful purposes.

"Currently, China's manned space flight and manned deep submergence have drawn close attention from the public and the international media have much speculation on the military purposes of them. Please give your response." asked a reporter.

Geng Yansheng answered that China's space cause is for the peaceful use of the outer space to promote the progress of human civilization and benefit all mankind, and is also for meeting the national needs in such fields as economy, science and technology and security. We have noted some moves in weaponization of outer space made by countries concerned. China has always been opposed to weaponization of outer space and will not compete in the arms race in outer space.

Geng Yansheng also said that China's "Jiaolong" manned submersible is developed for deep-sea scientific research and marine environmental protection. It will play a positive role in helping the human to understand the seas and oceans and carry out peaceful development and utilization of the seas and oceans.
