The military band of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) which was accompanying the "Zheng He" oceangoing training ship of the PLA Navy on a voyage around the world jointly held a concert with the Italian military band of the Taranto Naval Base on the evening of June 1, 2012, local time, at the Victoria Square at the center of Taranto.

The joint performance started officially at 19:30. The first to come on stage was a 44-people Italian military band of the Taranto Naval Base. The band played the Italian military march while marching from the naval barracks in Taranto up to the downtown Victoria Square. Afterwards, the military band of the PLA Navy appeared on the stage and played the Chinese military march while marching forward.

In accordance with its established conventions, the Italian Navy always invites the visiting naval military bands from various countries to hold a joint performance in the downtown square of Taranto every time. Liu Xiangdong, leader of the Chinese naval band once participated in a joint performance with this Italian military band during his visit to Italy 11 years ago.

A local resident noted that the performance given by the Chinese naval band was a brilliant success, which made him feel the charm of the Chinese culture.

It was the time to lower the national flags at 20:00 sharp. The national anthem of the People's Republic of China was played together first and the members of the Chinese naval band and the officers and men of the PLA Navy sang the March of the Volunteers loudly in unison. The Italian national anthem was played together later and the officers and men of the PLA Navy stood to salute the Italian national flag, pushing the joint performance to a climax.
