HINNIEH, Lebanon, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations awarded Friday a "Peace Medal" to the Chinese contingent of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for their peacekeeping efforts in south Lebanon.

At a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Chinese contingent in Hinnieh, South Lebanon, UNIFIL deputy commander, Brigadier General Patrick Faylin awarded the medal to the Chinese soldiers on behalf of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Faylin hailed the Chinese contingent's participation in the UNIFIL operations, pointing to the role the Chinese soldiers are playing, particularly in the demining operations.

At the end of the ceremony, which was also attended by Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Wu Zexian, the Chinese soldiers exhibited martial arts and acrobatic gymnastics.
