Ghanaian Vice President meets visiting Chinese Defense Minister

09:00, November 25, 2011

Accra, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian Vice President John Dramani Mahama met the visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and his delegation at the Vice President Office here on Thursday.

Mahama told Liang Guanglie and other senior Chinese military officers in the delegation that Ghana was one of the Sub-Sahara African countries which took the lead in establishing diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China in early 1960s.

The west African country and China have undertaken various exchange and cooperative programs in political, economic, trade and cultural sectors ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations 51 years ago, the Vice President said.

The Ghanaian leader appreciated the efforts by the Chinese leaders to accelerate economic development in China, whose achievement encouraged other developing countries to follow the example set by China.

Ghana attached great importance to relations with China, Mahama said, adding that the historic visit by Liang Guanglie, the first by a Chinese Defense Minister to Ghana, would surely further promote the existing friendly relations between Ghana and China as well as between the armed forces of the two countries.
