On Sept. 13, a group of freshmen wearing uniforms of the PLA Air Force started their classes at the School of Aerospace at Tsinghua University. These students were selected to study in a joint education program held by the Air Force and Tsinghua University, according to PLA Daily.

During their first three years of study in Tsinghua University, the pilot cadets will take courses on aviation theories as well as absorb the cultural essence of Tsinghua University so that they can become a new generation of highly qualified pilots.

Xu Qiliang, a member of the Central Military Commission and commander of the PLA Air Force, said that Tsinghua University has long upheld a glorious tradition of dedicating itself to cultivating scientists and engineers in the service of the country. In recent years, Tsinghua University has helped to form a complete system of national defense by participating in many national research projects and establishing relevant research institutions.

Xu said that the Air Force has new requirements to meet the demands of safeguarding country's interests in the new millennium. Meanwhile, Chinese people have new expectations about the development of the country's air power. Therefore, it is an inevitable necessity of the times to build up a powerful army.

Xu added that this joint program is an innovation in training flight talent under new circumstances in that it explores a new model of cultivating pilots, speeds up the transformation of combat generation mode of the Air Force and provides a pool of talented pilots.

The leaders of Tsinghua University said that they will stand at a height of national strategy and national defense to try their best to complete the task of cultivating pilot cadets and gradually deepen their cooperation with the Air Force.
