BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday called on officials to "unswervingly" carry forward the reform and opening-up and "confidently" overcome all difficulties and risks on the road ahead.

Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks when addressing the opening session of a workshop for ministerial officials and provincial heads, ahead of the CPC's upcoming 18th National Congress.

Taking into account the domestic and overseas situation, China is faced with both unprecedented opportunities and challenges, Hu said.

Hu vowed to continue China's scientific development, promote social harmony and improve people's welfare.

Over the past 10 years, China has grasped and made good use of important strategic opportunities despite the volatile international situation and arduous tasks to carry out domestic reforms, he said.

In the period, the country has overcome a number of serious challenges and pushed forward the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics to a new stage of development, he said.
