BRUSSELS, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton on Monday congratulated Leung Chun-ying's victory in the chief executive election of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

"I wish to extend my congratulations on your election as Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 25 March 2012," Ashton said in a statement.

She said the EU attaches great importance to Hong Kong's stability, economic prosperity and democratic development and, in accordance with the basic law of the HKSAR and the wishes of the people of Hong Kong, supports substantial progress towards the goal of universal suffrage in 2017.

"Let me extend to you my best wishes for the prosperity, stability and democratic development of Hong Kong and for the further deepening of EU and Hong Kong relations during your term in office," Ashton said.

The HKSAR held the election for the fourth-term chief executive on Sunday morning. Leung won 689 votes of the 1,132 votes cast by members of the 1,200-member Election Committee.
