Vice Premier urges elimination of fire risks, protection for firefighters

10:42, March 24, 2012

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged the elimination of potential forest fire hazards and the creation of a "scientific" firefighting method to guarantee the safety of firefighters and other people.

Hui's remarks came after a recent outbreak of forest fires in southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, which have experienced significant decreases in precipitation in recent years.

The State Forestry Administration and its forest fire prevention office issued a statement after an emergency meeting held on Friday, urging forest fire administrations at all levels to strictly supervise outdoor fire use and properly prepare for possible fires.

Local fire prevention offices should deploy firefighters as soon as a fire breaks out and ensure their safety by adopting a more technical firefighting method, the statement said.

After extinguishing a fire, local offices should cooperate with public security departments to find the cause of the fire.

A forest fire that broke out in Yunnan's Jinning county was put out as of 5 p.m. Friday. Another fire that continues to rage in Sichuan's Jiulong county is slowly spreading northeast, the statement said.
