Hu reiterates opposition to 'Taiwan independence' (2)

08:08, March 23, 2012

"Faced with new opportunities and a new situation, we always consider cross-Strait relations by putting them into the historical context of the development of the Chinese nation," Hu said.

The CPC and the KMT, as well as the mainland and Taiwan, should "ponder and carefully plan for future cross-Strait development" by "being responsible for the people, for history and for the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation," Hu said.

Hu said the CPC should see the cross-Strait situation "objectively," and gather all favorable factors to boost cross-Strait relations.

The CPC will "spare no efforts" to solve problems related to Taiwanese' immediate interests, so that they could "share more of the fruits of the cross-Strait development," Hu said.

Hu reiterated that "both parties and sides should continue to consolidate the political mutual trust," which is still the primary and crucial driving force for the sound development across the Strait.

"Although the mainland and Taiwan have not yet been unified, the Chinese territory and sovereignty remain intact, and the fact that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China has not changed, which is in line with the current cross-Strait rules and should be observed by both sides," Hu said.

Cross-Strait cultural exchanges should be increased to enhance Taiwanese' identification with the Chinese and their recognition of the Chinese culture, he added.

Putting aside differences while seeking common ground and sound interactions based on the political mutual trust, is "basic experience" gained from past exchanges between the two parties and the two sides, and also "a crucial condition" for the improvement of cross-Strait relations, Hu said.

Hu called for both sides to steadily promote exchanges and cooperation in economic and cultural fields.
