Senior officials stress innovation

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders stressed Wednesday that nurturing innovation is the core of the national development strategy and important to accelerate the economic transformation.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said so in a written speech to the 2011 conference on innovation organized by the Economic Daily, a national newspaper.

Li urged news media to pay more attention to the publicity concerning improvement of innovation and make more efforts in spreading innovative spirits and creating a sound environment for innovation.

Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said in a congratulatory letter to the conference, enhancing innovation is key to promoting economic development and strengthening comprehensive national power, urging the focus on major technical breakthroughs.

At the opening of the conference, State Councilor Liu Yandong called for deepened technical reforms and establishment of mechanism for scientific institutions, universities and enterprises to jointly boost innovative capacities.

This conference, with the theme of "China coping with world economic changes with innovation," attracted more than 200 government officials and representatives from cities and enterprises.
