China says agriculture vital for social, economic stability

08:22, December 29, 2011

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said Wednesday China must avoid mishaps in agriculture and the supply of major farm produce because it is vital to ensure stable price levels, relatively fast economic growth and social harmony in the world's second largest economy.

Hui said the agricultural sector and rural regions have witnessed continuous, comprehensive, and faster development this year, which has played a conducive role in the management of inflationary expectations and maintaining social stability and harmony.

"We will also promote agricultural modernization as we push forward industrialization and urbanization," Hui said at the annual central conference on rural work that concluded Wednesday in Beijing.

Hui highlighted the effective supply of farm produce, scientific and technological innovations in agriculture, fiscal spending on rural infrastructure building, and farmers' livelihoods as the major fields in which the country will step up efforts to promote next year.
