BEIJING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China held a symposium on Monday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Liao Hansheng, a former deputy defense minister and lieutenant general in the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature, attended the symposium.

Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, called on the public to learn from Liao's "lofty ideals and down-to-Earth work style.

Born in 1911, Liao joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1933. He was granted the rank of lieutenant general in 1955. Liao was later appointed as deputy minister of national defense.

He was persecuted and imprisoned from 1967 to 1973 during the Cultural Revolution.

After the end of the Cultural Revolution, Liao continued to serve in key positions for the government and the military. He served as the vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee from 1983 to 1993.

Liao died in Beijing at the age of 95 on Oct. 5, 2006.
