BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Vice President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on the residents of Hong Kong to help the region overcome obstacles and create a better future by focusing on economic development while promoting democracy.

Xi made the remarks while meeting with Leung Leung Shing, a Hong Kong businessman, and his delegation from the Hong Kong Federation of Guangdong Hakka Associations, Ltd. during their Beijing visit.

The Hakka, a subgroup of China's Han ethnic group, live predominantly in the provinces of Guangdong, Jiangxi and Fujian. Their ancestors are thought to have arrived centuries ago from what is known today as central China.

The federation, which aims to promote Hong Kong's prosperity and stability by organizing exchanges and visits, was set up in Hong Kong in April with Leung as its chairman.

Xi said that development, stability and harmony are still the common wishes of Hong Kong's people, expressing his hope that the region's economy will continue its momentum and that local citizens will have greater confidence in Hong Kong's future.

Xi urged the federation to play an active role in social affairs in Hong Kong and offer full support for the regional government in carrying out its administrative responsibilities in accordance with the law.
