Senior official urges special police officers to better uphold social stability

15:25, October 21, 2011

WUHAN, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged members of the country's nearly 50,000-strong special police force to play greater roles in safeguarding the nation and social stability.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, urged that the special police force be built into a "heroic force."

Zhou made the instruction on Thursday at a symposium focused on the development of the special police force held in Wuhan, capital city of central Hubei province.

A parade showcasing the force's combative capacity was also held here.

Zhou also praised the special police force for its role in upholding social stability, and aiding in disaster relief efforts and in other extreme conditions since its inception in 2005.

Zhou encouraged the force to excel in political loyalty, discipline, dedication, spirit and combative capacity.

The Ministry of Public Security, in early 2005, decided to build a special police force in 36 major cities across the nation to meet emergency needs.

China currently has 48,000 special police officers arranged in over 900 units.

Yes, the police force"s function need to be better identified and fine tuned to bring it in line with the rest of the world"s. The current system - The Ministry of Public Security - is an anachronism.
