President Hu calls for peaceful reunification of China

13:41, October 09, 2011

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday called for the peaceful reunification of China, which he said best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots.

Hu made the remarks at a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of China's 1911 Revolution, or the Xinhai Revolution.

Efforts are needed to strengthen the political common ground of opposing "Taiwan independence" and upholding the 1992 Consensus, he said.

"We should...end cross-Straits antagonisms, heal wounds of the past and work together to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he added.

Rejuvenating China, which was the cherished goal of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and other pioneers of the Revolution of 1911, should be the common aspiration of all compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Hu said.

The 1911 Revolution, which began on Oct. 10, 1911, with an armed uprising, ended 2,000 years of imperial rule by toppling the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and resulting in a republican government, the first in Asia.

In his speech on Sunday, Hu quoted Dr. Sun Yat-sen as saying "Unification is the hope of all Chinese people. If unification is achieved, the people will enjoy a happy life; if it is not, the people will suffer."

"Achieving reunification by peaceful means best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including our Taiwan compatriots," Hu said.

Hu also called for efforts to promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, share in the benefit of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, increase the economic competitiveness of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, carry forward the fine traditions of the Chinese culture, enhance the sense of a common national identity, and constantly resolve problems on the way ahead.

The one China including Taiwan is actually a fact for leaders on both sides of the Straits had all along since the Civil War laid claims to either side. Thus, mainland and Taiwan is actually one country but torn apart due to differences in political ideology. President Hu"s call for peaceful unification of China is a very positive and welcome move. Differences in political ideology should not be allowed to split China. The people on both sides of the Straits is still one big family and of the same blood. Let"s also be careful of internal and external forces who are out to split China because of their ulterior motives. These undesirable forces are often puppets of foreign powers who often interfere in the internal affairs of China.

Socialism with Chinese characteristics is the correct road for the Chinese nation and all Chinese people. The CCP and the KMT and all other political parties can be subsumed under a new China National Party covering Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.
