Senior Chinese leader calls for efforts to promote citizens' morality

08:51, September 21, 2011

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Senior leader Li Changchun on Tuesday called for efforts to boost the influence of "model citizens" in order to promote positive values and morality among the general public.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark while attending a forum for China's outstanding citizens.

China launched a biennial nationwide campaign in 2007 to select and recognize model citizens who have displayed outstanding professional dedication or who have contributed to social development through acts of honesty, kindness and respect.

More than 65 million people gave recommendations for approximately 36,000 candidates for this year's forum, according to the event's organizers.

On Tuesday evening, an awarding ceremony was held in Beijing and 54 of the candidates have been recognized as this year's "model citizens" for their positive contributions to society.

The ceremony also gave nomination prizes to 260 others.

Li Changchun attended the awarding ceremony and presented medals to the model citizens.

Yes indeed morality can help reduce government administrative abuses and corruption in any corner of the world. The olden Chinese society rank scholars, farmers, labourers and Businessmen... in decending order not because of scholars contribute more to society but their morality and rightiounessToday many though is money comes first, but if the morality still not up kept, then how the world can be a good one. Then no body can sleep well. We must know how to balance the two. Good move Senior citizens.

Excellent move China needs to pay much attention on this aspect - morality. And also the general quality of people in term of common courtesy, decency, honesty, manners, etiquette and good general impression on the world stage. This is part and parcel of China’s public diplomacy and soft power. This does not mean China has to be nice when confront with right out aggressiveness but able to be assertive and being smart.
