Senior official calls for independent innovations to boost economic, social development

08:59, September 01, 2011

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official on Wednesday called for a better social environment for independent innovation to further promote the country's economic and social development.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks at a meeting with an innovation team from National University of Defense Technology (NUDT).

Improving independent innovation capabilities is a key factor in the national development strategy and innovations in technology, theory and culture should be greatly encouraged and promoted, Li said.

Generations of NUDT's innovation teams have made many contributions to national security and technological development with indigenous innovations, including the Tianhe-1 supercomputer.

The NUDT's innovation teams set an outstanding example that all Chinese should follow. The teams stand for patriotism and the spirit of reform, Li said.
