People watch the bonfire on the campus of Geneva University, Switzerland, Aug. 1, 2011. On Aug. 1, 1291, the Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Nidwalden signed a mutual defense pact and were later joined by surrounding areas to form the Republic of Switzerland.
