People watch the bonfire on the campus of Geneva University, Switzerland, Aug. 1, 2011. On Aug. 1, 1291, the Swiss cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Nidwalden signed a mutual defense pact and were later joined by surrounding areas to form the Republic of Switzerland. Since 1891, the first of August has been celebrated as Swiss National Day. (Xinhua/Yu Yang)
