On July 31, all scaffolding was removed from the reconstructed Chinese aircraft carrier. On July 27th, the Defense Ministry announced that China was now transforming a waste aircraft carrier platform named Varyag for the purpose of training and scientific experiments.
Built in the 1980s by the former Soviet Union, Varyag is a conventional aircraft carrier. In 1998, the scrapped Varyag was bought by a Chinese company, and it arrived in China' Dalian Port in March 2002.
