Most of the workers in Ulingan are teenagers even as young as six or seven. Ulingan is a squatter community in the North Harbour of Manila, where families work as Ulingeros or charcoal workers. Children here are unable to go to school because of poverty. Estimates suggest 60 per cent of the population has tuberculosis while other lung problems, due to the ever-present smoke, and water-borne diseases are commonplace.
