Winners for Economy Science & Technology News Stories: The Ruin of the Greek Industry

Around many cities of Thrace, northern Greece, near the border with Bulgaria and Turkey, there have traditionally been industrial areas that have both been pioneers in the financial growth of the region and have secured jobs for a big part of its population. However, towards the end of the last century, the lower working costs of neighboring emerging economies such as FYROM, attracted businesses to relocate away from the area. Others simply shut down operations due to financial strain, not least because of the recent ongoing economic crisis in Greece. It is estimated that, from the 200 plants that were stationed in Thrace, roughly 30 have survived so far. Now, only the remains of plants and businesses remind the visitor of the once flourishing industrial areas of Thrace. Today, the unemployment rate in the area is calculated to 40,7%.
