Big humanitarian mission

(Shanghai Daily)

15:40, October 18, 2011

The Chinese naval medical ship Peace Ark passes through the Panama Canal toward the Atlantic Ocean early yesterday on a humanitarian mission to offer medical services to people in Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Costa Rica. Peace Ark is the first hospital ship in the world with a 10,000-ton capacity. The ship sailed from Zhejiang Province in eastern China a month ago. It carries 428 officers including 100 medical workers and has 300 beds, 20 ICUs, eight operating theaters, and the capacity to accommodate 40 major surgeries a day - about as many as a large hospital in Beijing. It was just the second time that Chinese naval ships crossed the canal since 2002.
