Chinese President Hu Jintao (left) shakes hands with former President Jiang Zemin after Hu delivered a speech at a conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to commemorate the centennial of the 1911 Revolution that overthrew imperial rule in China. On October 10, 1911, an armed uprising broke out and successfully forced Emperor Aisin-Gioro Puyi to abdicate the throne. Led by Dr Sun Yat-sen, the revolution marked the end of the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911) and the fall of one of the longest-lasting autocratic monarchies in the world, as well as resulting in the establishment of Asia's first republican government.(Shanghai Daily Photo)

Chinese President Hu Jintao yesterday called for the peaceful reunification of China, which he said best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including Taiwan compatriots.

Hu made the remarks at a ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of China's 1911 Revolution, or the Xinhai Revolution.

Efforts are needed to strengthen the political common ground of opposing "Taiwan independence" and upholding the 1992 Consensus, he said.

"We should ... end cross-Strait antagonisms, heal wounds of the past and work together to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," he added.

Rejuvenating China, which was the goal of Dr Sun Yat-sen and other pioneers of the Revolution of 1911, should be the common aspiration of all people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Hu said.

The 1911 Revolution, which began on October 10 with an armed uprising, ended 2,000 years of imperial rule by toppling the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and resulted in a republican government, the first in Asia.

Hu quoted Dr Sun Yat-sen as saying: "Unification is the hope of all Chinese people. If unification is achieved, the people will enjoy a happy life; if it is not, the people will suffer."

Hu said: "Achieving reunification by peaceful means best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese, including our Taiwan compatriots."

Hu called for efforts to promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, share in the benefit of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, increase the economic competitiveness of both sides of the Taiwan Strait, carry forward the fine traditions of the Chinese culture, enhance the sense of a common national identity, and constantly resolve problems on the way ahead.

Good idea. But when? The longer this tarry, the more likely Taiwan will move away from mainland China? What is Ma Ying-jeou waiting for? He loses nothing since they will basically be continuing on as before except being a vassal of Washington and its foreign policy being dictated by Washington also. The unification of Taiwan with Mainland China will be a great event that will bring pride to every Chinese. We will look bigger and stand taller. So mr Ma, the ball is in your court. There is much to be gained by reunification. Washington and Tokyo doesn"t want what is in the interest of the Chinese. Can you show you can be your own man and a proud Chinese? History beckons and you can be huge part of it - your name being indelibly written in its annals. Afterall, that"s what it is to be in politics. We all want to leave behind, a great legacy. Will you miss that rare opportunity, Mr Ma Ying-jeou?
