A primary school student squats down to have lunch as there has never been a canteen at his school in Chongqing's mountainous rural areas since it opened in 1992, due to lack of funds. Some students buy simple food and snacks from stalls at the school gate, near where heavy trucks pass by. Other students, some of whom can't afford lunch, choose to eat at home after class. The school head teacher has recently announced a plan to build a canteen and dormitory next year.
