Severe drought plagues Zhaotong in Yunnan

(People's Daily Online)

11:59, August 24, 2011

On Aug. 23, officials from the water affairs bureau inspect a reservoir that is drying up due to severe drought in Zhaoyang prefecture of southwest China's Yunnan province.

Since February 2011, Zhaotong has been affected by extreme weather, such as low rainfall, uneven distribution of rainfall and regional rainstorms. It is the longest drought in decades since the weather records were first kept in Zhaotong. The drought has lasted for seven months, lingering from spring to autumn, and has affected nearly 2,800 square kilometers of farm fields.
