Sustained heavy rain pounded Dazhou, a mountain valley city in southwest China's Sichuan Province from Aug. 3 to Aug. 4. The surging water from a swollen local river flooded streets of the city. The flood rose above the warning water line when it passed the main urban area.
Officials from the city's emergency response office said they had not received reports of any casualties. At least 18,600 residents have been evacuated in a suburban area as more than 600 houses collapsed. Roads were also cut off.
