Nigeria seeks improved funding for anti-HIV/AIDS campaign in Africa

11:15, December 07, 2011

LAGOS, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government has called for the categorization of African countries into two groups for better funding in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

John Idoko, director-general of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, made the appeal Monday in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa at the ongoing 16th International Conference on HIV and Sexually-Transmitted Infections in Africa, a statement reaching Xinhua said.

"The issue of financing has to be shared. Some countries are doing better than others in terms of their economy and, as a result, those countries can actually look after themselves, so the money that goes to them can go to poorer countries," the statement quoted Idoko as saying.

Idoko said financing health insurance in Africa was not encouraging and called on leaders to develop interventions that would enable them to properly fund health insurance.

He said the National Health Insurance Scheme was working well in Nigeria and there would be a stakeholders' meeting in January where proper funding methods would be considered.

The director also said state and local governments needed to be involved in financing the fight against HIV/AIDS at their levels.

He said governments needed to have the political will to match their words with the required action for the proposed African Solution to be effective.
