"The Vow", three other debuts rule North America box office

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A romantic drama, a Denzel Washington-starred action thriller, a 3D adventure film and a 3D re-release of "Star Wars" franchise have helped usher in an impressive weekend in North America box office, when each of them succeeded in garnering more than 20 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales, and nabbed the top four slots of the box office derby.

Topping the chart is "The Vow," a romantic drama starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, which is estimated to take in 41.7 million dollars, according to distributor Sony Pictures. Based on a true story happening in 1993, the film recollects how a newlywed couple, against all odds, took pains to fall in love all over again as the wife lost her memory, could not recognize her husband after she suffered severe head injury which put her in a coma for weeks after a car accident.

The film, which costs about 30 million dollars to make, drew droves of moviegoers, who gave it a CinemaScore of "B". The majority of them were female, who accounted for 72 percent.

Standing in second place is CIA-themed "Safe House", a Washington starrer, which according to distributor Universal is projected to rope in 39.3 million dollars, representing the second- highest opening for the Academy Award winner since his 2007 hit " American Gangster" with a 43.6 million dollar opening. Playing against Ryan Reynolds, Washington portrayed a rogue ex-agent who heads to South Africa on a mission. The thriller attracted large number of Washington's middle-aged fans, 62 percent of whom was over the age of 30. It received an "A-" CinemaScore.
