LONDON, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A gritty tale of a mother's attempt to come to terms with son's involvement in a high school massacre won best film of the London Evening Standard Film Awards on Monday.

Lynne Ramsay's We Need to Talk About Kevin, was a fictional story about a woman struggling with the fact that her son killed his classmates at an American high school.

Michael Fassbender won the best actor prize for his two roles in Shame, a sex addiction drama, and Jane Eyre.

Olivia Colman took home the best actress award for her performance in brutal drama Tyrannosaur. It is her second major award in 2012, following the best actress at the London Film Critics' Circle for the same film two weeks ago.

Other winners included Andrew Haigh, who picked up the best screenplay for Weekend, a small-budget love story about two homosexual men, and Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe, who got the most promising newcomer awards for co-writing and directing Black Pond, an independent feature film.

Senna, a widely acclaimed film about the Grand Prix racing drive Ayrton Senna, was named the best documentary, and Irish comedy The Guard won the Peter Sellers comedy award.

The awards, chosen by a jury of six London-based film critics, come a couple of weeks before the Hollywood Oscars on February 26, and six days before the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in central London.
