09:33, October 19, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Former Calif. Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger is back for his first act on big screen in eight years, as the filming of the western "The Last Stand" started in New Mexico and Nevada on Monday.

The Lionsgate film, which stars Schwarzenegger in the lead role, marks the actor-turned-politician's first top billing since 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." The former Hollywood action star left the governor's office in January and announced he would revive his movie career.

"Fantastic first day on the set of 'The Last Stand,'" Schwarzenegger twittered about the first day of work. "Big thanks to the crew -- keep up the great work."

In the movie, Schwarzenegger plays Sheriff Owens, a former Los Angeles Police Department officer who resettled in a small border town after a botched operation. He accepts responsibility to take on a fleeing Mexican drug kingpin who headed for Mexico.

Directed by Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-Woon, the film also features Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville and "Friday Night Lights" cast member Zach Gilford.

The flick is projected to be produced for 30 million U.S. dollars. It is slated to open in North America on Jan. 18, 2013.
