Picasso's masterpiece to be auctioned at China art fair

GUANGZHOU, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- An international art fair kicked off Thursday in the city of Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong province, where a Picasso masterpiece will be auctioned, organizers said.

"Mother and Child," one of Spanish painter Pablo Picasso's lithographs, will be auctioned with his manuscript notes at the 16th Guangzhou International Art Fair, according to a press release from its organizing committee.

The bidding starts at 8.188 million yuan (1.29 million U.S. dollars).

The fair, scheduled from Thursday to Monday, is expected to attract nearly 300 art institutions from more than 20 countries and regions, such as the United States, France and Russia.

More than 20,000 pieces of artwork will be displayed at the fair, which covers an area of 20,000 square meters, it said.

The fair, themed "Embrace the Color of the World," is organized by the China Artists Association and Guangzhou municipality government.
