Classic movie scores by master film composer Joe Hisaishi will be performed in two concerts this month, one as a piano recital on Saturday, the other as a piano and string ensemble accompanied by animated videos next Tuesday.
"Summer - Joe Hisaishi Piano Stories Concert" will be staged at Shanghai Oriental Art Center with young soloist Tan Xiaotang. On Tuesday, the "Castle in the Sky" concert will be presented at the People's Grand Theater, with Hayao Miyazaki's Animation Symphony. Composer Hisaishi is famous for film scores, especially in collaboration with animation master Miyazaki.
The piano concert will feature "One Summer's Day" from the awardwinning animated film "Spirited Away" and "Ballade" from the film "Brother." The program will also feature "The Wind of Life," "Friends" and "Madness."
Hisaishi's collaborations with Miyazaki include "Kiki's Delivery Service," "Princess Monoke" and "Spirited Away." They are adapted for the animation symphony concert on Tuesday.
Since 1981, Hisaishi has composed more than 100 film scores, exploring and incorporating minimalism, experimental electronic, European classical and Japanese classical.
He has adapted Irish folk songs in "The Castle in the Sky," American country music in "Kiki's Delivery Service" and traditional Japanese music in "Princess Monoke." He creates dreamlike feelings and leaves plenty of room for imagination.
