Yu Chunming graduated from China Academy of Art, one of the most prestigious art institutions in China, in Hangzhou in 1982. After graduation, Yu became an art teacher in architecture department of Nanchang University. Deeply moved by the spirit of historical folk houses, he made numerous trips to remote countryside of various regions of China, and accumulated 3,000 sketches and watercolors over 13 years. Chinese folk houses thus became a recurring subject of Yu's work.

In 1996, Yu arrived in the United States as a visiting professor in UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). When in the United States, Yu combined eastern and western painting approaches to show the beauty of Chinese historical folk houses to the western world.
As a painter, Yu gained great success. He held more than 20 personal painting exhibitions around the world since 1990 and his works were colleted by many institutions.
In 2010, Yu came back to China to teach at Nanchang University and founded a museum at the university with 160 Chinese export porcelains he collected in the United States. The museum on Chinese export porcelains promotes the study of Chinese porcelain and culture exchange between china and the western world.
