Asia is becoming increasingly popular around the world, with four countries and regions ranked among this year's top 10 destinations for expats in terms of financial opportunities and life experiences, according to the HSBC's latest Expat Explorer Survey.

The survey, the fifth edition of its kind, is the world's largest global survey of expats. It questioned online 5,339 expats in about 100 countries between May and July 2012, with the respondents evaluating their host countries based on an array of factors including economics, overall experience and raising children (in a few countries). A total of 30 countries and regions were ranked in the final report.

Singapore replaced last year's bellwether Thailand to be No.1 on the list. The Cayman Islands grabbed the third post. China's Hong Kong SAR and Malaysia, both from Asia, appeared at 5th and 7th spots, respectively. The Chinese mainland jumped to 11th in 2012 from 25th in 2011, indicating its growing popularity with expats.

Last year's No. 8, Japan, came in at 19th this year, while the United States fell from 11th in 2011 to 22nd.

The Middle East symbolizes a region providing incentives and rewards to expats looking for financial gain, according to the survey. While in Europe, Germany is most popular among young career-driven expats who want to find greater job opportunities or better financial gain. France and Spain lead the way as countries favored by those looking to retire away from their home country.
