The ninth day of the ninth lunar month is the traditional Chongyang Festival, or Double Ninth Festival. The festival falls on October 23 this year. It is also known as festival for the elderly.

There were many customs on the Double Ninth Festival in ancient times, including climbing mountains, drinking while enjoying chrysanthemum flowers, wearing cornels, and eating Double Ninth cakes.

Folklorist: Give young people a holiday on the Double Ninth festival

Xiao Fang, a professor from School of Chinese Language and Literature of Beijing Normal University and a renowned folklorist, said that the Double Ninth Festival was originally an unlucky day and people should shelter in high mountains. Since the Wei dynasty, it has gradually turned into a festival of praying for good fortune and long life.

In the 1980s, China set the Double Ninth Festival as a festival for the elderly. Xiao pointed out that it marked the fact that the focus of the festival had been shift to social aspect. The festival originally included natural and social factors, which initially related with nature and then with society. The problem of the elderly is currently the most realistic issue in China.
