Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Tibet Autonomous Region People's Government, the "2012 Tibetan Thangka Art Exhibition" debuts in China National Museum. More than 100 fine Thangkas created by more than 50 contemporary painters and 30 precious Thangkas collected by historical monuments like the Potala Palace are exhibited. "Thangka" is a transliteration word from Tibetan language, and is usually translated as "scroll painting". The history of Thangka can be traced back to 1300 years ago. In June 2006, Thangka was listed on the national intangible heritage roster. According to incomplete statistics, more than 100 fine Thangkas are accomplished by painters every year in the autonomous region.
