More than 200 ancient fortified mountain villages were found in Zheng'an County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province during the 3rd National Archaeological Survey. Most of these fortifications were built at the end of Ming dynasty and the beginning of Qing dynasty. Zheng'an County lies in the hinterland of Qinling Mountains and has guarded vital lines of communication for several hundreds of years. The mountain fastnesses in different figures and with different functions formed a secular defense system in ancient times.
