Back when Art Beijing debuted in 2006, it was largely unknown to the public. Six years later, this art fair has matured into one of the most influential events in Asia. From Sunday to May 2, patrons are invited to experience the art of Asia and the culture of China by attending the event, held at National Agriculture Exhibition Center.

In previous years, Art Beijing was staged twice a year, once for contemporary art and once for classic art. This spring, the Contemporary Art Fair and Fine Art Fair will be held jointly for Art Beijing 2012.

"We combined the contemporary and classic elements together, because we will hold another event, Design Beijing, in September. The event will focus on lifestyle art, like fashion or furniture design," said Ye Nan, head of media broadcasting of Art Beijing.

Ye told the Global Times that this year's art fair will continue its focus on being"locally based and Asia-oriented," the running theme over the past six years. They aim to cooperate with local Chinese art galleries, while solidifying contacts with galleries throughout Asia. Art Beijing seeks to integrate art resources, allowing different perspectives on culture and welcoming art from various countries. Art Beijing 2012 aims to establish a strong reputation as one of the world's leading art fairs.

The exhibition occupies a total area of nearly 20,000 square meters, the biggest art fair in Asia.

In the beginning of November last year, executive director Dong Mengyang went to Taipei to hold an introduction meeting for the event, calling on more galleries from Taiwan to take part in. During the New Year holiday, Dong visited Japan and Korea to encourage galleries to attend Art Beijing 2012.

Since October, when the submission process began for exhibitions, the Art Beijing Executive Committee received applications from about 300 arts institutions. After a rigorous examination by the Art Beijing Art Committee, about 200 galleries, art agencies, embassies and culture centers were invited to participate at the event.
