According to sources from the State Forestry Administration of China, China will establish 68 new pilot national wetland parks.

Since China approved its first pilot national wetland park the Hangzhou Xixi National Wetland Park in February of 2005, it had established 213 pilot national wetland parks by the end of 2011, the total area of them is more than 1.5 million hectares and the total area of the wetlands under protection is about 1 million hectares.

Different from normal parks, wetland parks not only have the ecological tourism function but also are a part of the national ecological construction and wetland protection system.

According the four standards of the wetland ecosystem protection, wetland function recovery, wetland knowledge education and proper use of wetland resources, China will check and approve these pilot wetland parks in batches. In 2012, China has checked the first batch of 14 pilot wetland parks and approved 12 of them.
