India to screen entire population for cancer, diabetes in 5 years

NEW DELHI, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- India Tuesday said that it would screen its entire population in the next five years from cancer, diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

"India will be the first country in the world to screen the entire population in next five years," Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad announced in the Parliament.

The Health Minister said that already a pilot project has been launched in 100 districts of 21 states for prevention and early detection of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, strokes.

Under the pilot project, the government has provided equipment and human resource for detection and treatment.

"As per the latest estimates of Indian Council of Medical Research, the prevalence of cancer in the country is about 27 lakh," Azad said.

The incidence of new cancer cases every year in the country is about 1.1 million and about 500,000 people die every year from the ailment, he added.

According to the latest census, India's population is 1.21 billion.
