Indian comedy hit "3 Idiots" to screen in Chinese mainland

20:37, December 07, 2011

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Indian film "3 Idiots" will start screening in the Chinese mainland on Thursday, with the original and Chinese-dubbed versions being shown, according to China Film Group Corporation -- the film's importer.

The film is a loose adaption of the novel "Five Point Someone" by renowned Indian writer Chetan Bhagat. The story, about three college students who share a room and pursue their dreams, reflects the deeply-seated social education problems in the country.

Chinese actress Tang Wei, who made her fame in Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution," will act as the voice of the female leading character, according to the company.

The film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, a National Award and Filmfare Award winning Indian director, screenwriter and film editor of Hindi films.

After being screened in India in December 2009, the film has gained many domestic film awards including the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Lyrics in the 57th National Film Awards.

The film ranked second place, only after "My Name is Khan," the highest-grossing Bollywood film overseas. It has already won high acclaim in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
