Fuliancheng, a theatrical troupe in Taiwan, will perform Beijing opera on the mainland to celebrate the 107th anniversary of the founding of the company.

The troupe will perform in Beijing, Shanghai and Zhengzhou, capital city of central China's Henan province. Two operas, named "Meng Xiaodong" and "The Endless Night," will be staged at the Beijing Chang'an Grand Theater on Nov. 19 and Nov. 20.

Wei Haimin, the principal actor of the troupe and world-famous diva in Beijing opera presented at the briefing on Tuesday. With an elegant persona, a sweet voice and insightfully sensitive acting, Wei will play the protagonist Meng Xiaodong in the opera.

As an important part of celebrating the centenary of China's 1911 Revolution, or Xinhai Revolution, people across the straits are commemorating the 107th anniversary of the founding of the Fuliancheng Theatrical Troupe (previously called the Xiliangcheng Training School).

Founded in 1904, Xiliangcheng (later renamed the Fuliancheng) Training School aimed to improve training conditions for theatre apprentices in China.

Beijing opera dominated the traditional stage during the first half of the 20th century. The popularity of the drama should be attributed to a particularly talented group of actors. Among them, Mei Lanfang, who created the Mei group of the Beijing opera, is one of the towering figures among the actors that graduated from the Xiliancheng training school at that time.(Han Shasha)
