The heartland of Eurasia has seldom been peaceful. Afghanistan has long been a subject of the geopolitical power struggle among major powers. The U.S.-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has combated terrorism in Afghanistan for 10 years, but has not achieved the desired results.

In recent months, the planned withdrawal of NATO troops has intensified the security risks facing Afghanistan. The Afghans who have already endured terrible sufferings have been deeply saddened by a series of tragedies such as the incident of Marines urinating on dead Taliban fighters, the burning of the Koran and the murder of innocent civilians.

As a friendly neighbor of Afghanistan, China has always actively provided assistance to the country to help it ride out difficult times instead of standing idly by, and has played an important role in maintaining peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

China chaired the first trilateral dialogue among China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan in late February, which produced positive results. The three countries believe that the trilateral dialogue has provided a new important platform for the three countries to enhance friendly cooperation and maintain regional peace and stability.

Rangin Dadfar Spanta, national security adviser to Afghan president, spoke highly of China's important role and the trilateral dialogue during a recent interview in China. In addition, under China's influence, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has actively discussed Afghanistan-related regional security issues.

As two friendly neighbors and great countries with ancient civilizations, China and Afghanistan have maintained long-standing friendship, and cooperated with each other for thousands of years. Over the past 10 years, China has actively participated in and promoted the reconstruction of Afghanistan by providing assistance to the country within its capability.
